Final results: SA Publication Forum’s Corporate Publication Competition 2012

Close on 150 publications, electronic newsletters and DVDs were entered this year.

Publications were judged in terms of writing, communication, design and photography in the following categories:

* Newspapers

* Internal magazines

* External magazines (Category A, higher budget external magazines and

Category B, external magazines with a lower budget.)

* Internal newsletters

* External newsletters

* Once-off publications

* Annual reports

* DVD newsletters and corporate DVDs

* Electronic publications

* The best corporate website

* The best publication with a smaller budget

* South Africa’s best corporate publication and

* Editor of the year

  • Publications that achieved more than 75% in the categories of writing, communication, and design and photography received certificates of merit.
  • A certificate was awarded to the best achiever in each category, across writing communication and design. Trophies were also awarded to the best publication in each category.
  • A certificate was awarded to the most improved publication and to the best cover.
  • A certificate was awarded to the publication with the best headlines.
  • A trophy was awarded for the best overall corporate publication of 2012; and
  • Finally, awards were presented to the editor of the year and to the two runners-up.

2008 Competition Results

Close on 130 publications, electronic newsletters and DVDs were entered this year. There was also a marked improvement in many publications compared to this year compared to our previous competition. It is clear that editors take the judges' comments very seriously and strive to improve their publications. Obviously, the competition is meeting one of its objectives, that of improving the standard of corporate publications in South Africa.

2007 Competition Results

Contact, staff newspaper of the City of Cape Town received top honours at the SA Publication Forum's corporate publication competition this year. The awards function was held in Midrand on Thursday, 30 August. Shireen Sedres and Beatrice Moore-Nöthnagel, both from Santam shared the top spot as Editor-of-the-Year. Santam also won the award for the best internal magazine for essence and best external magazine on a smaller budget for Santam Focus.

Sandown Pulse, entered by Hothouse Communications won best internal newsletter, while Words'Worth Publishing won best external newsletter for its title Small Capital. Other companies that excelled included New Media Publishing who won best writing for their title Mercedes and were runners-up in several categories. Words'Worth Publishing won best external newsletter for its title Small Capital. IntraNews of the Metropolitan Health Group won best electronic newsletter, Spier won best sustainability report and Sasol won the award for best annual report.

Design company Interactive Africa received top honours for best design with the Vodaworld mag. Design Achievers: 20 years, produced by the SABS Design Institute won the award for the best once-off publication.

The African Motion Picture Company produced six finalists in the corporate DVD section and received top honours for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Council DVD. Standard Bank was awarded best DVD newsletter for their staff DVD Blue Wave.

This year in the region of 150 publications were entered and the judges felt that the standard was higher that ever.

Why the pen is mightier than the keyboard

At the recent SA Publication workshop, The coming of the e-age, Sophia Dower of Words’worth gave valuable tips on how to write for electronic publications. She says: There’s good news and there’s bad news...

There’s good news and there’s bad news.

The bad news is that if you have an e-newsletter it is probably not as good as you think; it is probably read by fewer people than you think; and it is probably because of poor content.

The good news is that you CAN develop good copy that will improve your e-newsletter immeasurably, and you DON’T have to be a professionally-trained copywriter to do it.
